Sony's Licensing Strategy Sparks Debate Over Digital Ownership

The debate over digital ownership has been reignited by a class action lawsuit against Sony in California. The company's argument that users who purchase games on the PlayStation Store do not obtain ownership, but rather a revocable license, is not unique to Sony.

In fact, it reflects standard practice across the digital entertainment industry. However, for the crypto sector, this case provides an empirical argument for tokenized ownership and distributed registries as a technical alternative to the license model.

The current NFT implementations present limitations that must be solved before a real substitution becomes possible. Most NFTs commercialized in recent years do not grant effective ownership over underlying content, and the tokens point to metadata hosted on centralized servers or external storage systems with dependencies.
