South Korea Tops East Asia in Crypto Activity with $449 Billion Surge
South Korea has emerged as the dominant force in East Asian crypto activity, recording $449.1 billion in transactions from July 2025 to June 2026. This figure is nearly double that of Japan, which registered $228.3 billion in the same period, placing it in second place. The surge in crypto activity in South Korea is primarily driven by retail investors, highlighting their growing influence in the region’s largest market.
AI tokens have become the most popular thematic category among South Korean investors, reflecting both the country’s regional leadership and the specific interests of its crypto enthusiasts. This trend underscores the nation’s strategic position in the digital asset space and the concentrated focus on AI-related investments.
In contrast, Hong Kong’s crypto market shows a different investor profile. Institutional platforms in Hong Kong account for 16% of inflows into crypto services, a significantly higher share than in other East Asian markets. This indicates a more diversified investor composition, with both retail and institutional players shaping the landscape.
The data reveals that crypto activity in East Asia varies not only in scale but also in investor behavior. While retail trading fuels growth in South Korea, institutional platforms play a crucial role in Hong Kong. These differences highlight the unique dynamics of each market within the broader regional context.
