South Korea's Top Exchanges Implement Real-Time Balance Reconciliation
South Korea's five major digital asset exchanges have implemented real-time balance reconciliation systems to ensure the integrity of user assets. This move follows a mandate from financial authorities to prevent incidents like the Bitcoin (BTC) overpayment at Bithumb in February. The five exchanges - Upbit, Bithumb, Coinone, DigitalX, and Gopax - now reconcile their held assets against internal ledgers at intervals of five minutes or less.
The Financial Supervisory Service conducted an on-site inspection of Bithumb in July and found that the exchange had implemented a real-time balance reconciliation system. However, the service is proceeding with sanctions against Bithumb related to the overpayment incident. The exchanges' new systems enable them to detect discrepancies between held assets and ledgers in near real-time, a significant improvement in user asset protection.
The move reflects a broader trend of strengthening internal controls at digital asset exchanges. The financial authorities had mandated the establishment of real-time balance reconciliation systems with cycles of five minutes or less, taking into account average processing time per procedure, computer system load levels, and market precedents.
