Stablecoin Reserves Plummet as Bitcoin Spot Demand Surges
The reserves of stablecoins on centralized exchanges have dropped significantly over the past few months. According to CryptoQuant data, the balances across these venues have fallen to around $64 billion, a decline of approximately 20% from their peak near $80 billion in late 2025.
This contraction has left less idle cash on order books to absorb selling pressure when prices drop. Stablecoins serve as the primary quote currency for crypto trading pairs, making their exchange balances a rough gauge of ready buying power.
Binance has seen its share of stablecoin liquidity rise to 68.5%, up from the low-60% range, while rival venues have experienced sharper declines in balances. CryptoQuant's apparent demand gauge for Bitcoin broke above zero on August 18 at approximately 25,000 BTC, marking the first positive reading in six months.
