Standard Chartered Becomes First Bank to Distribute Hong Kong Dollar Stablecoin
Standard Chartered has become the first bank to distribute a Hong Kong dollar stablecoin, Anchorpoint's HKDAP. The move marks a significant development in the distribution layer for regulated stablecoins, shifting away from exchange-only distribution and towards balance-sheet institutions.
The arrangement allows Standard Chartered to introduce HKDAP to eligible clients and partners, bypassing the need for separate retail trading venues. This controlled rollout aligns with Hong Kong's approach to stablecoin regulation, emphasizing licensing and controlled access.
The distribution role changes the landscape for corporate treasurers, who can now hold or move Hong Kong dollar stablecoins without going through a crypto-native exchange. However, this may also compress the onboarding path for businesses, making it harder to read demand from exchange volumes alone.
