Standard Chartered Becomes First Bank to Distribute Hong Kong Dollar Stablecoin
Standard Chartered, a global bank with $850 billion in assets, has become the first bank to distribute a Hong Kong dollar stablecoin. The bank will distribute Anchorpoint's HKDAP token to eligible clients and partners, marking a significant shift in the distribution of stablecoins.
This move indicates that regulated stablecoin access is moving away from exchange-only distribution and toward balance-sheet institutions. Distribution by a bank introduces the token to corporates, institutional partners, and existing clients without building a separate retail trading venue.
The arrangement between Standard Chartered and Anchorpoint has raised questions about the reserve structure and redemption process of HKDAP. The initial announcement did not provide details on whether the token is backed by liquid HKD assets or how frequently attestations occur.
