Stolen Coldcard Funds Spark Bitcoin Laundering Solicitation on Blockchain
A recent hack of Coldcard wallets has resulted in an estimated 1,359.8820 BTC being stolen, according to statistics collected by the Coldcard Sweep Watch dashboard.
The attacker consolidated funds into a relatively small number of addresses after sweeping vulnerable wallets during several coordinated waves beginning on July 30.
In an unusual twist, one of the attacker's holding addresses received a transaction containing an OP_RETURN message that openly advertised services to 'clean' bitcoin and provide know-your-customer (KYC) assistance in exchange for a 10% fee.
The message appears to be a direct solicitation aimed at whoever controls the stolen bitcoin, sparking speculation about whether it's a serious offer or a honeypot.
