Strategy Authorizes $5B Bitcoin Sale Amid Record Loss
Strategy Inc., formerly known as MicroStrategy, reported a staggering Q2 2026 net loss of $8.22 billion, with an operating loss of $8.33 billion for the quarter.
The main culprit behind this massive loss was the $8.32 billion unrealized fair value loss on the company's Bitcoin holdings, which translates to $24.45 per diluted share.
Despite the heavy losses, Strategy still holds a substantial amount of Bitcoin, with between 843,775 and 846,000 BTC at quarter-end, representing roughly 4% of all Bitcoin that will ever exist.
The company's shares dropped approximately 7% in pre-market trading following the earnings release on July 30-31, 2026.
In a bid to shore up its finances, Strategy has authorized a program to sell up to $5 billion worth of its Bitcoin stash, with $1.25 billion earmarked for USD reserves and $2 billion potentially used for share and credit repurchases.
