Strategy CEO Stands by Bitcoin Sale, Cites Balance Sheet Strength

Strategy, a company known for its complex capital management strategies, recently made waves in the cryptocurrency market. According to CEO Phong Le, selling Bitcoin at what appeared to be the bottom was actually a calculated move. In an interview with Bloomberg Crypto, Le explained that Strategy sold 6,916 BTC across four tranches from late June through mid-August at a weighted average near $62,200.

At the time, the sale sparked controversy among investors and analysts who questioned whether it was the right decision to sell Bitcoin at what seemed like a low point. However, Le maintains that the move was not about timing the market, but rather about funding Strategy's dividends when issuing shares had become expensive. The company used the proceeds from the sale to issue STRC, a variable-rate preferred stock that helps keep their balance sheet strong.

Strategy's strategy is centered around its ability to adjust the value of STRC to maintain its $100 stated value. When STRC slipped below par in June, Strategy was forced to sell Bitcoin to try and repeg it. Le acknowledges that this move was a financing decision, but emphasizes that it was necessary to keep their balance sheet healthy.

The company's strategy is complex and depends on multiple variables, including the price of Bitcoin and the premium at which MSTR trades. By buying back BTC at an average price of $80,318 last week, Strategy is essentially betting that the market will continue to rise. Le's argument is that a stronger balance sheet makes equity cheaper to issue, which in turn allows them to buy more Bitcoin.
