Strategy Turns Profitable as Bitcoin Holdings Surge to 848,000 BTC
Strategy, the company formerly known as MicroStrategy, has returned to profitability in the third quarter after a late-summer Bitcoin rally boosted the value of its digital assets by approximately USD 21 billion. This marks the end of four consecutive quarters of losses, according to Bloomberg. The company also acquired an additional 334 Bitcoin for USD 28.7 million, bringing its total holdings to a record 848,000 BTC as of October 4.
The gain reflects an unrealized increase in the value of Strategy's Bitcoin holdings rather than cash received from sales. The company's update placed the gain at USD 20.91 billion, with an associated deferred tax expense of USD 1.88 billion. This recovery follows a challenging second quarter, where Strategy reported a net loss of USD 8.22 billion, including an USD 8.32 billion unrealized loss on digital assets as Bitcoin prices declined.
Strategy's latest Bitcoin purchase, made between October 1 and October 4, extended its weekly buying streak to three weeks. The company's Bitcoin position was valued at around USD 73 billion. Alongside this acquisition, Strategy repurchased about USD 176 million of its preferred shares, STRC. As of October 4, the company reported USD 5.7 billion in dollar assets.
Strategy remains the largest publicly traded corporate Bitcoin holder. Executive Chairman Michael Saylor has led the company's Bitcoin treasury strategy, utilizing share offerings and other financing arrangements to support purchases. The company has also raised significant funds through share sales and built a cash reserve to cover preferred dividends and debt interest.
