Tether Brings USDT Back to Bitcoin with Private Transfers and Swaps
Tether is bringing its flagship stablecoin, USDT, back to the Bitcoin network nearly a decade after it shifted primary issuance to Ethereum and Tron. The move is part of an infrastructure project called Utexo, which will enable private transfers, direct BTC-USDT swaps, and loans backed by Bitcoin. The relaunch is planned for October 2026.
The technical foundation of Utexo combines the RGB protocol and Bitcoin's UTXO model. This design powers the three headline features, allowing users to send USDT privately, swap directly between BTC and USDT without intermediaries, and take out loans using native Bitcoin as collateral. The initial launch is planned for Bitcoin's mainnet, with support for the Lightning Network expected to follow later.
Utexo's approach to compliance is different from how freezes typically work on account-based chains. Instead of freezing entire addresses, Utexo will use a blacklist of UTXOs linked to illicit activity. This means that specific bills can be flagged, rather than an entire bank account being locked.
Early demand for Utexo's offerings appears to be high, with over 450 businesses expressing interest in the project. Potential discussions involving major institutions, including Morgan Stanley, have also been mentioned, although these talks are not confirmed deals.
