Token-Backed Mortgages Go Mainstream as Better and Coinbase Expand Homeownership Access
Two major players in the fintech and cryptocurrency space are expanding access to homeownership for millions of borrowers worldwide. Better Mortgage and Coinbase have made their token-backed, conforming mortgage product available to all Coinbase One members.
The companies first tested demand with a crypto-backed mortgage waitlist that opened in June 2026, representing more than $260 million in projected loan volume before the program's broader release.
According to the firms, 76% of respondents were already Coinbase One users and 60% reported that they planned to buy a home within six months. The token-backed conforming mortgage is designed under Fannie Mae guidelines, making it a standard conforming mortgage despite the use of pledged crypto assets in the underwriting process.
Approved Coinbase One borrowers can receive a 1% lender-funded closing cost credit, up to $10,000, across Better's standard mortgages, home equity line of credits and refinances. The first-lien product is originated and serviced by Better and powered by Coinbase.
