Treasury Intervention Sparks Cryptocurrency Surge
Bitcoin's value surged to over $77,000 this week after hitting a low of around $60,000 in June, while gold rose to its highest level since January. The sudden spike was triggered by the Treasury Department's announcement that it would significantly increase its buybacks of long-term Treasurys, sending shockwaves through bond markets and prompting investors to seek alternative assets.
The Treasury's move raised concerns about inflationary pressures and potential handcuffing of the Federal Reserve, which fights inflation by raising interest rates. The national debt surpassed a record $40 trillion on the same day, adding to anxiety over inflation. Investors flocked into gold, which rose more than 2%, and Bitcoin, which jumped over 20%.
President Donald Trump's call for Congress to pass crypto-friendly legislation, known as the Clarity Act, at a White House conference also contributed to the surge in Bitcoin's value. The cryptocurrency had been stuck between $62,000 and $67,000 for weeks before breaking through that upper level on the day of the Treasury announcement.
As investors closed their bearish positions, buying back the digital asset added fuel to the rally, potentially triggering still more liquidations as prices climbed. Over $4 billion in bearish crypto positions had been liquidated during the rally by Friday.
