Treasury Volatility Signals Potential Storm for Bitcoin and U.S. Stocks
Macro observers are growing increasingly wary of the current stability in both Bitcoin and U.S. stocks, with concerns that this calm may be masking impending turbulence. Bitcoin is currently trading at $85,652, while U.S. stocks appear relatively steady, but analysts are watching Treasury notes for early signs of stress.
The MOVE Index, which measures the expected volatility of U.S. Treasury yields, has been showing higher lows, even as the VIX, which tracks stock market volatility, has recorded lower highs. This divergence has raised alarms among some market watchers, who see it as a potential warning of future volatility in equities.
Kurt S. Altrichter, a wealth manager and author of the RiskSIGNAL Report, highlights that the MOVE Index has historically preceded equity market volatility. He notes that the index has signaled market distress before the VIX in past events, including the turbulence of 2022 and major geopolitical conflicts.
The MOVE Index, officially known as the ICE BofA U.S. Bond Market Option Volatility Estimate, assesses anticipated fluctuations in Treasury yields over the next month, with a heavy focus on 10-year bonds. While it indicates the level of expected volatility, it does not predict the direction of yield movements. The current stability in Bitcoin and U.S. stocks may be misleading, as underlying shifts in Treasury markets suggest potential upheavals ahead.
