Treasury Yields Snuff Out US Stock Win Streaks Amid Bitcoin Rally
Major US stock indexes ended their three-week winning streaks on Friday as rising Treasury yields and increased uncertainty led to market volatility. Despite this, American equities managed a positive close for the day.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average surged by 518 points (1%) while both the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite climbed 0.4%. However, these gains were not enough to offset weekly losses across all three benchmarks.
Market participants interpreted fluctuations in the bond market as a primary catalyst for this week's instability. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced plans to expand the government's bond repurchase initiative beyond its current $4 billion per issue threshold. This move was intended to provide liquidity support, but initial optimism proved short-lived.
Despite these headwinds in traditional markets, cryptocurrency Bitcoin rallied to a price of $77,000, marking its strongest weekly gain in 24 months. The CBOE Volatility Index hovered around 15 on Friday, indicating relatively stable market expectations in the immediate future.
