Trump Renames Strait of Hormuz Amid US-Iran Hostilities
US President Donald Trump sparked controversy on Wednesday by suggesting that the Strait of Hormuz be renamed 'Trump Strait' in light of renewed hostilities between Iran and the US. The proposal comes after a wave of strikes against Iranian military targets, which Tehran claims targeted civilian areas.
The US Central Command (CENTCOM) launched the strikes, targeting air defense sites, radar systems, maritime assets, mine laying capabilities, and communications sites linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
Iran's Foreign Ministry accused the US of attacking civilian areas and service infrastructure in several provinces, including Khuzestan, Sistan and Baluchestan, Hormozgan, and Kerman. The ministry claimed that a wedding ceremony in Kuhestak was struck, resulting in fatalities and injuries.
Tensions between the two countries have been escalating since the US withdrew from the Iran nuclear deal last year. Trump's attempt to rename the Strait underscores how both Iran and the US are vying for control of the vital waterway, which carries roughly a fifth of global oil exports.
