Trump's Crypto Push Fails to Bring in New Investors
Despite efforts by President Donald Trump to promote cryptocurrency and make the US the 'crypto capital of the planet', investors are not biting. According to a new report from the Urban Institute, only about 9% of Americans own crypto now, down from roughly 17% who have ever owned it at some point.
The report suggests that many professional crypto investors have left the market or gone into hibernation since the price collapse in October 2025. The value of Bitcoin has fallen significantly since then, from around $125,000 to about $65,000 in late July 2026.
Crypto adoption may have peaked four years earlier, in 2021, when 12% of Americans bought, sold, held or otherwise used it. By contrast, roughly 62% of Americans own stocks.
