Trump's Guardrail for AI: A Strong and Smart President
President Trump made headlines when he posted on Truth Social that AI needs only one guardrail: 'a STRONG AND SMART (High IQ!) PRESIDENT.'
The statement, dated September 14, 2026, came amidst a flurry of competing proposals from lawmakers to build out a federal AI oversight apparatus.
Senator Bernie Sanders wants a full pause on frontier model development until a new cabinet-level agency exists, while Senator John Thune proposes an office with the authority to block a model's release before it ships. Treasury has floated a FINRA-style self-regulatory body for AI that would report to a Treasury official.
However, every single one of these proposals shares a common feature: the person running them would work for the president and could be fired by the president.
This matters more than it used to due to the Slaughter ruling, which let presidents remove commissioners of independent agencies without cause. Now, every federal agency except the Federal Reserve answers directly to the executive branch.
Trump's post wasn't anti-regulation so much as a reminder of who would be holding the leash on any regulator Congress creates.
