Trump's Onshore Crypto Push Rocks Markets with Hyperliquid Surge
The US government has signaled a significant shift in its stance on cryptocurrency trading. President Trump mentioned that CFTC Chairman Michael Selig has been assigned to establish Hyperliquid, a crypto exchange built for perpetual futures, onshore in a fully compliant and legal way. This move could bring about a major change in the market.
Perpetual futures are leveraged contracts that never expire, allowing traders to bet on price moves without a set end date. The platform's decentralized model runs on its own blockchain, which is different from traditional exchanges like Cboe or CME. This structure may require regulators to decide whether it fits the same compliance framework as these established platforms.
Hyperliquid Strategies Inc., a listed treasury company that holds the HYPE token, saw its shares climb as much as 31% on Wednesday after Trump's comments. The HYPE token itself also moved in response to the news. Established exchange operators like Cboe Global Markets and CME Group dropped by up to 6.1% and 3.4%, respectively.
Monarq Asset Management's COO, Ayesha Kiani, noted that 'the bigger story is not just the price move. It is that decentralized market infrastructure is becoming part of mainstream policy conversations.'
