UK Opens Cryptocurrency Gate Early, Giving Firms Over a Year to Prepare
The UK's Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has opened its gates to fully regulated cryptocurrency firms, giving them more than a year to prepare before the new regime takes effect on October 25, 2027. Starting September 30, crypto companies can apply for FCA authorization, but the actual rules won't come into force until next year.
The existing applicants will be allowed to continue providing services and taking new customers while their applications remain undecided, even after the regime begins. This means that firms can keep operating as usual while waiting for the FCA's decision.
The regulator has set a deadline of February 28, 2027, for crypto companies intending to remain in the UK market. The FCA expects to determine applications filed during this window before the regime starts.
Crypto firms must satisfy standards covering consumer protection, safeguarding customer assets, market integrity, and financial resilience to be authorized. Those that fall short will not be allowed to operate in the UK market.
