Uniswap's V4 Fee Math Dispute Heats Up as Adams Defends Additive Claims

Uniswap's newly activated v4 fees have sparked controversy among liquidity providers (LPs), with founder Hayden Adams pushing back against claims that the change reduces LP earnings. According to Adams, protocol fees are additive and not subtractive from LP allocations.

The dispute centers around how v4 fees operate in relation to existing fee structures. Critics argue that protocol fees mathematically narrow the base on which LP fees are calculated, even if swap volume holds constant. In response, Adams has stated that the 'protocol is taking 25% of LP profits' is made-up math.

Adams used a 30-basis-point pool as his reference case to demonstrate how protocol fees operate. He claims that a 5-basis-point protocol fee represents roughly 14% of total swap fees, not a reduction in what LPs earn. However, it's worth noting that Adams' arithmetic has been disputed, with some pointing out that the actual figure is closer to 16.7%. The discrepancy highlights the live dispute over the structural effect of v4 fees on LP returns.

The stakes for LPs are high, given Uniswap's $3.06 billion in total value locked (TVL) and its position as the largest decentralized exchange by TVL according to DefiLlama. The tension between UNI tokenholders who benefit from protocol revenue capture and LPs who supply liquidity is set to continue.
