Upbit Lists Japan's First Yen Stablecoin, Raising Cross-Border Money Flow Concerns
South Korea's Upbit has become the first cryptocurrency exchange in the country to support trading in a stablecoin pegged to the Japanese yen, JPYC. This development marks a significant milestone for the adoption of yen-based stablecoins in the Korean market.
JPYC is Japan's first yen stablecoin, launched by issuer JPYC Inc. in October last year. With Upbit now supporting trading in JPYC, Korean investors can buy and sell a cryptocurrency tied to the value of the yen using won, without converting their money into Japanese currency first.
The listing on Upbit is expected to improve access to JPYC for domestic users, with one user noting that 'you can now buy JPYC directly with won on Upbit and move it to a personal wallet.' The expansion of use cases for JPYC in payments and decentralized finance (DeFi) is also being closely watched.
Regulators are paying close attention to the growth of cross-border money flows through foreign-currency stablecoins, with trillions of won in dollar-pegged stablecoins flowing out of South Korea each month. The listing of JPYC on Upbit raises concerns that yen-linked assets will also be used for transferring value across borders.
