US Crypto Bank Anchors Nuclear Commodities with xU3O8 Token Custody
Anchorage Digital Bank N.A., the first federally chartered crypto bank in the United States, has taken a unique step by offering institutional custody for xU3O8, an on-chain token backed by physical uranium yellowcake. The token represents actual metal stored in certified facilities at Cameco, with regular proof-of-reserves audits published to ensure its authenticity.
The move allows regulated funds to hold a tightly restricted radioactive commodity inside the same segregated, bankruptcy-remote bank accounts they use for bitcoin (BTC) and cash equivalents. This is a significant development, as traditional procurement of physical uranium has been cumbersome, requiring bespoke broker networks, specialized regulatory clearances, and massive order minimums.
The xU3O8 token, issued via Uranium.io with U.K.-regulated firm Archax acting as trustee, turns the legal claim into an asset that transfers within minutes. This is a major breakthrough for institutions interested in tokenized real-world assets, as they can now hold them in a way that satisfies their risk framework.
Nathan McCauley, Anchorage Digital CEO, explained that institutions are not short on interest in tokenized real-world assets but are short on places to hold them. The OCC-supervised custodian provides a significant advantage over offshore wallets for institutional chief risk officers.
