US Senate Blocks Crypto Bill, Leaving Regulatory Ambiguity Alive in Industry
The Clarity Act, a comprehensive cryptocurrency bill backed by President Donald Trump, was blocked in the US Senate. The bill failed to advance due to a procedural vote that fell short of the required 60 votes, securing only 49 votes.
The failure of the Clarity Act has significant implications for the crypto market. Bitcoin's price plummeted following the news, dropping from around $78,000 to about $76,000. The decline reflects investor uncertainty and volatility in the market.
Crypto companies had lobbied extensively for clearer regulations, which would have provided legal certainty and fostered institutional participation in the market. However, with the bill stalled, the focus now shifts to the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), which could set rules for the crypto market using their existing authority.
Shiv Ram Pande, Chief Business Officer at BitSave, stated that while there will be little day-to-day change for crypto companies and investors in the near term, regulatory questions remain relevant. The Clarity Act aimed to establish a clear framework for digital assets, which would have provided greater protection for investors.
