US Towns Crack Down on Energy-Intensive Crypto Mining Operations
Mount Carmel, a town in Tennessee, has become the latest to ban cryptocurrency mining operations and data centers following a unanimous vote by its Board of Mayor and Aldermen on July 23. This decision joins a growing list of US communities that are opposing the expansion of energy-intensive digital infrastructure.
The move reflects rising local concerns about the impact of crypto mining and large-scale data centers, which have been criticized for their heavy electricity usage, noise pollution, water consumption, environmental damage, and alteration of rural or residential neighborhood character.
Residents in Mount Carmel had expressed worries about these issues during public meetings, where they argued that new data centers could threaten nearby homes and natural areas. They called for stronger zoning requirements, expanded buffer zones, and higher penalties for operators who break regulations.
