Vitalik Buterin Proposes Private On-Chain Voting with Indistinguishability Obfuscation

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has proposed using indistinguishability obfuscation (iO) to enable private on-chain voting. According to him, this method could eliminate the need for a trusted group to manage ballots or reveal results.

iO is a form of cryptography that turns software into a protected program. This means people can run the program and get the correct output, but they cannot see its internal code or pull out the data stored inside it.

Combining iO with blockchain infrastructure could support voting systems that are private and resistant to collusion, with almost no trust assumption. Buterin said this would replace threshold committees with a protected program built only to reveal the final outcome.
