$VLAD Memecoin Scam Exposes Vulnerabilities in X Accounts and Robinhood Blockchain
The CEO of Robinhood, Vlad Tenev, fell victim to a hacking incident on July 23rd. Three unusual signals validated this compromise.
A post from Tenev's X account announced the launch of a memecoin named $VLAD, described as the 'official Robinhood chain mascot.' However, the token was quickly deemed a scam due to its suspicious distribution and pump-and-dump strategy.
The wallets funding the $VLAD purchases were set up beforehand and accumulated the token before the public announcement. Within minutes of the announcement, these wallets started selling their holdings, generating approximately $1.2 million to $1.3 million from the VLAD token, which was worth around 650 ETH at the time.
Tenev acknowledged the hijack hours after recovering access to his X account and noted that Robinhood's newly launched blockchain, the Robinhood Chain, might have acted as bait for the attackers due to its rapid expansion and significant interest from investors. The chain has amassed over $750 million in on-chain assets since its launch earlier this month.
