Vulcan's AI Data Center Plans Spark Concerns in Dresden
Vulcan plans to replace Greenidge Generation's bitcoin mining operation in Dresden with an artificial intelligence data center, sparking concerns about electrical consumption, water usage, and noise pollution.
Data centers are notorious power hogs, consuming as much electricity as thousands of homes. Vulcan claims it will use the existing power plant's infrastructure, but critics argue that this won't reduce its overall energy needs. In fact, they expect the company to seek more power from the state grid, potentially exacerbating already-strained resources.
The new data center will also require significant cooling water, which could further impact Seneca Lake's aquatic life. Greenidge has been allowed to extract up to 139 million gallons per day, returning heated water to the lake at temperatures as high as 108°F in summer and 86°F in winter.
