Warsh Takes Aim at Inflation and Communication with Federal Reserve Reforms

Kevin Warsh, the Chair of the Federal Reserve, has been making waves since taking over the institution earlier this year. In his third FOMC meeting on September 15 and 16, he presided over a unanimous decision to raise interest rates by a quarter percentage point for the first time since 2023.

The new benchmark interest rate now sits at a target range of 3.75% to 4%, with markets expecting at least one additional interest rate hike by the end of the year. This decision comes as inflation has been running above the Fed's 2% target for more than five and a half years.

Warsh has also launched five task forces within his first month, each charged with developing recommendations across different areas of the Fed's mandate. One of these areas is communication, where Warsh wants to end the practice of forward guidance, which ties the Fed's hands and leaves officials with less room to respond to new information.
