Western Union Launches Stablecard for Visa-Enabled Stablecoin Spending
Western Union is launching Stablecard, a Visa-branded wallet that lets customers hold and spend a US dollar-backed stablecoin called USDPT. The company says this product will make it easier for people to use remittance flows in everyday spending.
The wallet-based system supports USDPT, issued by Anchorage Digital Bank on the Solana blockchain. It's designed for recipients of remittances who often face challenges with local currency volatility.
Western Union plans to expand Stablecard availability to more than 60 markets by the end of the year. The company views this product as a strategic attempt to modernize its infrastructure and keep customer-facing touchpoints familiar.
The move reflects intensifying competition in money transfers, with stablecoins increasingly being explored as rails for cross-border transfers. Western Union's rival MoneyGram has made a similar bet by launching MGUSD, a US dollar-pegged stablecoin on the Stellar network.
