Willow Quantum Chip Shatters Records with 10 Septillion-Year Computing Speed

Google's latest quantum chip, Willow, has achieved a groundbreaking milestone in computing speed. In under five minutes, it completed a benchmark computation that would take the world's fastest classical supercomputer, Frontier, an estimated 10 septillion years to complete.

This achievement marks a significant breakthrough in quantum error correction, a field where Google's team has made notable strides. By increasing the 'code distance' from 5 to 7 and reducing the logical error rate by a factor of approximately 2.14, Willow demonstrated unprecedented performance below the surface code threshold at both distances.

The benchmark task, called random circuit sampling, was specifically designed to test quantum processors against classical machines. Google announced the Willow results on December 9, 2024, alongside a peer-reviewed paper published in Nature. This achievement surpasses Google's previous milestone with its 53-qubit Sycamore processor, which demonstrated 'quantum supremacy' in 2019 by completing a calculation that would have taken thousands of years.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai has cautioned that practical, useful quantum computers are still 5 to 10 years away. However, this development demonstrates progress toward overcoming the error correction problem, which is crucial for developing reliable and efficient quantum computing.
