Wisconsin Passes Legislation Regulating Crypto ATMs Amid Growing Scam Concerns
Crypto ATM scams have become increasingly prevalent in Wisconsin and across the United States. Robert Semanko, a 31-year-old father of three from central Wisconsin, fell victim to one such scam in October last year. He was tricked into inserting $7,000 into a crypto ATM after being told he owed an additional $2,000 fine for missing jury duty.
The scammer posed as the Chippewa County Sheriff's Office and spent over three hours convincing Semanko to make the withdrawal. This incident highlights the growing concern of crypto ATM scams in Wisconsin, which have resulted in significant financial losses for many victims.
Wisconsin lawmakers have recently approved legislation regulating crypto ATMs statewide. The new law restricts daily transactions to $1,000, requires receipts after each transaction, mandates consumer identification, and offers refunds to victims. This is the first law in Wisconsin to place consumer protections on crypto ATMs.
According to Sen. Jesse James, R-Thorp, who co-authored the legislation, people need to be educated about these scams more. He believes that with the new law, it will help because people will be more well-versed on how this is coming about.
