Wise Expands into Mobile Internet with eSIM Services for Travelers

The fintech sector is expanding its reach into everyday life, moving beyond traditional financial services. Recognizing the importance of stable mobile internet for travelers, the Wise company has launched eSIM-based mobile internet packages for its customers. Partnering with the tech firm Gigs, Wise offers eSIM services in over 150 countries, including the EU, UK, and US, accessible directly through its app or website. This eliminates the need for travelers to purchase local SIM cards or register with separate eSIM providers.

Wise provides various country- and region-specific packages, allowing users to choose data amounts and validity periods for popular destinations. Frequent travelers can opt for 20, 50, or 100 GB global packages valid for 12 months. The eSIM's validity period begins upon first connection to a supported local network, enabling users to install it via WiFi at home and activate it upon arrival.

Once installed, the eSIM can be reused for subsequent data packages, eliminating the need for repeated installations. Users can retain their physical SIM cards for calls and SMS while relying on the Wise eSIM for mobile internet. Notably, Wise's eSIM is not a traditional mobile subscription, as it only provides data connectivity. The service can be managed and paid for directly from the Wise balance within the app.

Wise is not the first fintech to offer this service. Revolut has also partnered with 1GLOBAL to provide travel eSIM data packages through its app. Similarly, the Dutch fintech bunq and traditional banks like KBC and Belfius offer eSIM-based mobile services. This trend reflects a broader movement toward integrating multiple travel-related services into a single 'super app,' with mobile connectivity becoming a key component.
