World Cup Prediction Markets Surge Past $20 Billion
The 2026 World Cup was a major test of how far cryptocurrency has moved into mainstream sports, generating billions of dollars in blockchain-based prediction market activity.
According to Chainalysis, World Cup prediction markets generated $20 billion in volume from January through the end of the tournament. Nearly 400,000 crypto wallets participated, producing $5.7 billion in transactions during the five-week competition itself.
The largest markets focused on match outcomes and the eventual champion, but traders also backed less conventional questions, such as whether Cristiano Ronaldo would cry at the end of his final World Cup campaign, which generated $49 million in volume.
