Wrench Attacks Soar in 2026 as France Becomes Hotbed for Crypto Kidnappings
The number of wrench attacks has skyrocketed in the first half of 2026, with over 50 incidents recorded so far. Named after a popular webcomic, wrench attacks involve using violence or intimidation to compel crypto holders to reveal their private keys or passwords.
CertiK notes that this represents a 33.3% increase compared to the same period last year, when there were around 39 recorded attacks. The financial exposure associated with these attacks has also skyrocketed, from $10.5 million in 2025 H1 to $124.18 million this year.
France remains the epicenter of wrench attacks, accounting for 33 of the 52 incidents so far this year. CertiK attributes the spate of attacks in France to a variety of factors, including the country's large and visible cryptocurrency ecosystem and recent data exposure incidents affecting both private and public sector organizations.
