XRP Breaks New Ground as Settlement Asset for AI Agents
XRP (CRYPTO:XRP) is used for various purposes in the financial sector. Its primary functions include facilitating payment settlements between currencies, acting as collateral for positions at prime brokers, and covering expenses for software agents.
The latter function was introduced through a standard co-authored by Stripe and Tempo, using XRP in a way Ripple's own dollar stablecoin has yet to achieve. This development highlights the versatility of XRP beyond traditional payment transactions.
XRP serves as a settlement asset for AI agents, enabling machine-to-machine transactions. The Machine Payments Protocol (MPP), co-authored by Stripe and Tempo, utilizes XRP in its technical details. Payment Channels, native to the XRP Ledger, handle ongoing sessions for agents using XRP.
RLUSD, Ripple's dollar-backed stablecoin, runs on similar infrastructure but has yet to match XRP's usage as a settlement asset for AI agents. The daily transaction volume of RLUSD grew from roughly $200 million in January to approximately $750 million in August, with around $1 billion circulating on the XRP Ledger.
The XRP Ledger 3.3.0 upgrade introduced Permission Delegation, allowing one account to grant limited transaction authority to another without exposing the main private keys. This feature enhances the functionality of software agents using XRP.
