XRP Hack Spills Over to Bitcoin, Ethereum
The D'CENT wallet hack has resulted in one of the year's largest XRP losses behind Bitget, with hackers draining over 12.4 million XRP from more than 7,000 wallets.
The hack spilled beyond the XRP Ledger to other blockchains such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Stellar, with hackers able to sweep funds across blockchains using a compromised recovery phrase for the multi-blockchain wallet.
IoTrust, the maker of D'CENT, confirmed at least 110 abnormal transfer reports, including non-XRP assets. Warnings from D'CENT and other members of the XRP community couldn't stop the drainage, with thieves taking 640,370 additional XRP after September 21.
The theft spilled over to Ethereum's blockchain through the swap service THORChain, with 6.3 million of the stolen XRP being transferred by Friday. Researchers admitted that most of the losses were no longer in XRP form.
