XRP Takes Center Stage in Ripple's Cross-Border Payments Strategy
Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse emphasized the specific role of XRP in the company's payments strategy, highlighting its transaction speed and low costs. Speaking about the need for clear regulations around cryptocurrencies, he stated that they must have practical use cases to address specific problems.
Garlinghouse pointed to cross-border payments as an area where Ripple uses XRP, citing its potential applications in machine-to-machine and small-value transactions. However, he noted that different digital assets can serve different purposes, and XRP is not suitable for every use case.
Ripple sees regulatory clarity as important for cryptocurrency adoption, with Garlinghouse referencing the GENIUS Act as an example of legislation providing greater clarity for stablecoins. He also mentioned the company's legal case involving the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, stating that the court's finding that XRP is not a security provided greater clarity.
Garlinghouse discussed Ripple's expansion into its payments business through acquisitions, highlighting the potential distribution channel for its payment technologies. The company acquired GTreasury, which serves large businesses collectively handling about $13 trillion in payments during the previous year.
