Zano Rolls Back Blockchain After $36.9 Million Token Heist
Zano's blockchain was exploited by an attacker who created 36.9 million unauthorized ZANO tokens, along with Freedom Dollar (fUSD) tokens, before the team decided to roll back the blockchain by a month.
The attack occurred in two parts: on August 29 and September 25. In each instance, the attacker used a Gateway Address vulnerability to mint 18.4 million ZANO tokens. The unauthorized coins functioned as legitimate ZANO and could be spent normally.
The team acknowledged that rolling back the blockchain would hurt trust but argued it was necessary to remove the unauthorized supply, which could not be distinguished from legitimate coins.
