Zcash Holders Overwhelmingly Support Faster Block Times

Zcash (ZEC) holders have overwhelmingly voted in favor of faster block times and preserving the existing halving schedule. The vote, which closed on September 14th, saw 2,397,669 ZEC put behind cutting the target block time from 75 seconds to 25 seconds, with only 141.6 ZEC opposing it.

The voting process was organized by five organizations, including the Zcash Foundation and Shielded Labs, and used a dedicated voting chain built by Valar Group. The results show that almost 99.9% of voters supported reducing the block time, which is expected to improve network efficiency and speed up transactions.

The halving schedule, which determines when new coins are issued, was also preserved in its current form. This decision was made despite a proposal to replace halvings with a gradual curve. The existing halving calendar will continue to apply, with the next halving scheduled to occur after 5,040,000 blocks.

The vote also saw ZEC holders back shipping NU7 as soon as possible, without any features that are not implemented by September 30th. This decision was made despite some concerns about unfinished features being removed from the network.
