Zcash Mining Pools Balance Individual Effort with Collective Rewards
Zcash mining pools have become an essential part of the network's decentralized structure. These pools bring together individual miners to combine their computing power and share rewards, making it easier for smaller miners to participate.
The Equihash algorithm used by Zcash is memory-hard, which means that it relies on RAM rather than raw processing speed. This changes the type of hardware that performs well in mining, favoring GPU rigs over ASIC units early on. However, specialized ASIC hardware has since been developed for Equihash, shifting the balance again.
Block rewards are distributed to miners who successfully validate blocks and are then split among pool participants using various payout formulas. Most pools rely on PPS (Pay Per Share) or PPLNS (Pay Per Last N Shares), with some offering a hybrid model. These payouts can be daily or vary depending on the pool's luck.
Pool fees typically range from 0.5% to 3%, covering server infrastructure, uptime maintenance, and operational costs. Choosing a geographically closer server can reduce latency and rejected shares. Larger pools tend to find blocks more consistently but may have higher fees and lower payouts for individual miners.
