Zcash Price Surge Triggers $212M in Crypto Liquidations
Zcash's price surge has triggered a wave of short liquidations, contributing to a total crypto liquidation value of approximately $212 million. The cryptocurrency jumped 15% on September 4, reaching an intraday high near $1,023 to $1,051.
This price level marks the highest ZEC has traded in nearly a decade and was fueled by institutional inflows into Grayscale's ZCSH spot ETF, which launched on August 25. The fund accumulated over $400 million in assets within two weeks of listing, creating sustained buying pressure in the spot market.
The surge also exposed the lopsided leverage that has built up in the derivatives market around this coin, with open interest in ZEC futures reaching above $2 billion and a heavy concentration of short positions. Much of this bearish positioning dated back to May 2026, when a critical vulnerability was disclosed in Zcash's Orchard shielded pool.
The fact that ZEC is now trading at nearly decade-high prices just four months later speaks to how quickly crypto narratives can flip. Traders watching this space should pay close attention to the rate of ETF inflows and the open interest composition, as a slowdown or buildup in shorts could trigger liquidation cascades.
