Zcash Retires Legacy Address Pool Amid Security Concerns

The Zcash project is introducing a significant change to its protocol, known as ZIP 2003, which will affect holders of certain legacy addresses. The change aims to retire the Sprout pool, one of the oldest shielded pools in the network, due to low usage and security concerns.

According to the proposal, any balance remaining in the Sprout pool after November 5, 2026, may not be able to be spent or transferred. This is because the v4 transaction format used by the Sprout pool will no longer be supported after the NU7 network upgrade.

Holders who are affected should move their balances out of the Sprout pool before the deadline to avoid potential losses. The Zcash project has emphasized that this change is not about burning or destroying funds, but rather about closing a legacy feature that is no longer needed.
