Zcash's Cryptography Powers Proposed Shielded Bitcoin Transactions
A team of researchers from init, a New York-based cryptography lab, has proposed Shielded Bitcoin, a system that enables private transactions using Zcash's (CRYPTO: ZEC) encryption technology. This proposal comes as Zcash has surged nearly 96% in a month and reached its highest level in nearly a decade.
The researchers' design would allow users to hold encrypted notes documenting transaction amounts and recipients, along with proof verifying ownership and balance without exposing sensitive information. The system would operate as an additional layer on top of Bitcoin, eliminating the need for a soft fork.
However, the proposal leaves unresolved the issue of moving standard BTC into the shielded system and back, which could introduce risks and vulnerabilities. The researchers plan to address this with Bitcoin PIPEs, an experimental method based on witness encryption, but the specifics have not yet been published.
