Zooko Wilcox Shifts Focus to Shielded Labs and Zcash Innovation
Zooko Wilcox, a pioneering figure in cryptography, co-founded Zcash (ZEC), a cryptocurrency renowned for its use of zero-knowledge proofs to obscure transaction details. After leading the Electric Coin Company (ECC) from 2015 to December 2023, he now serves as Chief Product Officer at Shielded Labs, a Switzerland-based organization dedicated to supporting Zcash.
Wilcox's journey began with a computer science degree from the University of Colorado Boulder in 1998. A self-described cypherpunk, he contributed to early digital cash systems like DigiCash and developed models such as Zooko's triangle. His work on hash functions like BLAKE2 and BLAKE3 further cemented his reputation in the field. Zcash emerged in 2016 as a solution to Bitcoin's privacy limitations, leveraging zk-SNARKs to enable opt-in transaction shielding.
In December 2023, Wilcox stepped down from ECC, citing the need to decouple Zcash from his personal brand. He later joined Cypherpunk Technologies as a strategic advisor in December 2025. Currently, his focus at Shielded Labs includes initiatives like Epoch, a project aimed at developing post-quantum cryptography for Zcash, and HashSmash, a competition testing hash functions against AI agents. In May 2026, a critical flaw in Zcash's Orchard shielded pool was discovered and swiftly addressed, with over $8 million in retroactive grants approved by coinholders to address the issue.
Wilcox is now advocating for Crosslink, a consensus mechanism that combines proof-of-work and proof-of-stake to enhance Zcash's security and efficiency. He envisions Zcash as 'encrypted Bitcoin,' emphasizing privacy as a critical path in the era of AI-driven data analysis. His goal is to transform Zcash into a more secure and user-centric network while maintaining its strong safety record.
