Air New Zealand's Skycouch Offers Economy Class Bed on Long-Haul Flights
Air New Zealand's Skycouch in economy class offers a nearly flat sleeping experience on its long-haul New York City to Auckland route. The Skycouch converts three economy seats into a bed, featuring padded calf rests and a white mattress topper. The flight, operated on a Boeing Dreamliner 787-9, takes approximately 16 hours and 40 minutes, with Skycouch available on select flights three times a week.
Passengers on the Skycouch receive the standard economy class fare, which includes a choice of chicken and couscous or beef ragu with polenta for dinner. The aircraft is retrofitted with 13.3-inch screens, offering one of the largest displays in economy class, along with free Wi-Fi. The service was praised for being friendly and efficient, with enough crew members to attend to passengers.
However, travelers should be aware that the Skycouch isn't available on every long-haul Air New Zealand plane. A fellow passenger mentioned that her Skycouch booking was canceled due to operational issues, resulting in a plane swap. Prices for the Skycouch start at around $5,250 for a return trip from Sydney to New York, significantly less than business class but more expensive than standard economy.
Air New Zealand is committed to sustainability, aiming for net zero carbon emissions by 2050 and using 10 percent sustainable aviation fuel by 2030. The overall experience was rated highly for comfort and sleep opportunities, making it a cost-effective alternative to business class.
