Air New Zealands Skycouch Offers Economy Class Comfort for Long-Haul Flights
Air New Zealand's Skycouch in economy class offers a unique way to travel long distances more comfortably. On a recent 16-hour, 40-minute flight from New York City to Auckland, the Skycouch transformed three economy seats into a bed, providing a flat sleeping surface. The flight, operated on a Boeing Dreamliner 787-9, featured 37 Skycouch seats in rows H, J, and K. Despite a 70-minute delay due to runway congestion at JFK, the check-in process was smooth, though Auckland's transit security was chaotic due to a single operating lane.
The Skycouch itself is designed with padded calf rests that create a wide couch when activated, measuring 29 inches wide and 61 inches long. Passengers receive a white mattress topper, along with the standard economy blanket and pillow. The flight's economy cabin was nearly half empty, which is typical for this route, according to a crew member. The aircraft was retrofitted with 13.3-inch entertainment screens, one of the largest in economy class, and offered free Wi-Fi.
Skycouch passengers enjoyed the standard economy menu, with dinner options including beef ragu with polenta and red peppers, paired with a glass of Villa Maria Sauvignon Blanc. Air New Zealand aims to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 and plans to use 10% sustainable aviation fuel by 2030. However, one passenger noted that Skycouch bookings can be canceled if the aircraft is swapped for one without Skycouches, resulting in a refund for affected passengers.
Prices for the Skycouch experience start at approximately $5,250 for a return trip from Sydney to New York, significantly less than business class at around $12,500. The overall experience was rated highly for comfort and sleep quality, making it a compelling alternative to business class at a fraction of the cost.
