Air New Zealand's Skycouch transforms economy class on long-haul flights
Air New Zealand's non-stop flight from New York City to Auckland offers a unique economy class experience with its Skycouch option. The nearly 17-hour flight, operated three times a week on a Boeing Dreamliner 787-9, features Skycouches that convert three economy seats into a bed. These Skycouches are located at the front of the economy cabin and provide passengers with a padded calf rest, a mattress topper, and standard economy bedding.
The flight, which typically takes 16 hours and 40 minutes, was delayed by about 70 minutes due to runway congestion at JFK. Despite the delay, the check-in process was seamless, and the baggage handling was efficient, even with a tight connection in Auckland. Air New Zealand's loyalty program, Koru, allows passengers to earn Airpoints on flights with the airline and its Star Alliance partners.
The Skycouch option comes with standard economy class fare, including a choice of chicken and couscous or beef ragu with polenta for dinner. The aircraft features 13.3-inch entertainment screens and free Wi-Fi. The service was praised for being friendly and efficient, with enough crew members to attend to passengers. Air New Zealand is committed to sustainability, aiming for net zero carbon emissions by 2050 and 10% sustainable aviation fuel by 2030.
Passengers can book the Skycouch for around $5,250 for a return trip from Sydney to New York, significantly less than business class fares of about $12,500. However, it's important to note that the Skycouch isn't available on every long-haul Air New Zealand plane, and bookings can be cancelled if the aircraft is changed. Overall, the Skycouch option was rated highly for its comfort and sleep opportunities, making it a great alternative to business class at a fraction of the cost.
