Albanese's Climate Meeting Takes a Backseat as Economic Concerns Dominate
Australia's Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is currently on his way to Fiji and Tuvalu for a 'Pre-COP' meeting, one of Australia's initiatives in the Pacific region to limit China's influence. However, with climate change slipping down the public's agenda, the focus has shifted to other pressing issues such as AI and the cost of living.
The Reserve Bank recently hiked interest rates for the fourth time this year to the highest level since 2011, exacerbating concerns about inflation. Treasurer Jim Chalmers attempted to deflect blame onto the Iran war, but RBA Governor Michele Bullock stated that domestic capacity pressures are the primary drivers of inflation.
The government is now facing conflicting demands: to respond to calls for fresh savings or to spend on new cost-of-living relief ahead of its budget update in December. Independent MP Allegra Spender has proposed a return to more general means testing, but this idea is considered politically unpalatable.
