AUD Surges as RBA Rate Hike Expectations Intensify
The Australian Dollar has strengthened against its major currency peers except for the US Dollar, due to market expectations of a forthcoming interest rate hike by the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA). The RBA's Official Cash Rate stands at 4.35%, following a 75 basis point increase this year.
RBA Governor Michele Bullock recently warned of upside inflation risks and hinted that monetary tightening may not be enough to bring inflation back in line with targets within a reasonable timeframe.
Analysts at Commerzbank noted that the RBA's OIS market now prices in an 85% chance of a 25 basis point hike during next week's policy meeting, further bolstering expectations for a rate increase.
The US Dollar, on the other hand, has seen some gains as investors anticipate more interest rate hikes from the Federal Reserve to combat high inflation levels. Minneapolis Fed Bank President Neel Kashkari emphasized that inflation remains a top concern, driven by factors beyond rising oil prices.
